Terms of Use

Version: 10 September 2026. This text applies to the Frelestray web interface and to the apps we publish for Android and iPhone. If it changes, we will ask for your consent again.

1. Provider

The provider of Frelestray is SCAI GmbH, Quettinger Straße 143a, 51381 Leverkusen, Germany, e-mail admin@frelestray.com. Managing directors, register entry, VAT identification number and the other mandatory details are given in the legal notice, which you find under "Legal".

2. What Frelestray is

Frelestray suggests circular hiking routes: you pick a starting point and a desired length, the service computes loops and rates them by quietness, forest, marked trails and points of interest. You can plan and edit routes yourself, export them as GPX files, navigate along them and save them with an account.

Frelestray is a prototype. Environment data (forest, settlement, noise, points of interest) is currently available only for a limited test area; outside that area the search finds paths but cannot rate them. The service may be changed, restricted or discontinued at any time. There is no entitlement to availability.

3. Using the service

You may use Frelestray for your own hikes and for planning tours, privately or professionally. Automated bulk requests, circumventing access limits and any use that disrupts operation are not permitted.

You may use Frelestray only through the applications we provide ourselves: the web interface at frelestray.com and the apps we publish for Android and iPhone. The programming interface (API) through which these applications talk to our servers is part of these applications and not an offering of its own; we currently do not offer a public interface for third parties. It is therefore not permitted to call the interface with your own programs, scripts, browser extensions or modified versions of our applications. Identifiers, keys and certificates our applications use to reach the service must not be extracted, passed on or used in other programs.

In particular, you must not use our interface or the service's responses to offer a route, map or tour service of your own, whether free of charge or for a fee. This includes relaying other people's requests to our service, building our responses into a product or website of your own, systematically retrieving generated routes, ratings or environment values in order to build your own data sets, and embedding our map tiles or our place search for other purposes. What you have received as an individual route through our applications you may continue to use under section 4, including as an exported GPX file. If you want to integrate Frelestray into an offering of your own, contact us; without a written agreement with us there is no permission to do so.

An account is needed to save tours and to export routes as GPX files. GPX export is limited to 200 files per account and day, and there is no bulk download; the reason is given in the document “Licences and attribution”. An account belongs to one person; keep your credentials secret. An account may only be created by someone who is at least 16 years old; you declare this at registration. Violations of this section constitute abuse; we may then block accounts and technically bar access, even without an account. You can delete your account yourself at any time; this removes all saved tours and account data.

4. Generated routes and your rights to them

Generated routes contain information from OpenStreetMap, which is licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL). You may use generated routes in accordance with the ODbL. What governs is the licence text at https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/, with a summary and the OpenStreetMap Foundation's answers at https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright. GPX files exported by Frelestray already carry the credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL" in their metadata.

Route name suggestions are produced with the help of a language model and are suggestions without warranty of accuracy or uniqueness.

5. Liability

For generated, planned and edited routes the separate notice on automatically generated routes applies, which you confirm before your first route. Routes are suggestions; checking them on site and deciding along the way is up to you.

Unless owed otherwise, we are liable only for intent and gross negligence. This does not affect liability for damage resulting from injury to life, body or health, or liability under mandatory law such as product liability law.

6. Licences, privacy and derivation

These three texts stand beside this one as separate documents, because they are something other than terms: you declare nothing by reading them — we discharge our duties with them.

"Licences and attribution" names the sources and their licences and explains why GPX export requires an account and is capped per day.

"Privacy Policy" states which data we process, for what purpose and for how long. It is information under Art. 13 GDPR and is therefore not confirmed.

"How we derive data from OpenStreetMap" describes the method by which our own values are computed from OpenStreetMap data. It is our offer under section 4.6b of the Open Database License.

You can read all three here before you agree, and at any time in the interface under "Legal".

7. Final provisions

The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies. Mandatory consumer protection provisions of the state in which you habitually reside remain unaffected. The place of jurisdiction is Leverkusen, Germany, in so far as you are a merchant, a legal person under public law or a special fund under public law, or have no general place of jurisdiction in Germany. Mandatory places of jurisdiction for consumers remain unaffected. Contracts on the use of Frelestray are concluded in German only. Solely the German version of this text and of all other legal statements of Frelestray is authoritative. Versions in other languages, including this one, are provided for information only and are not legally binding.
